Ceramic Braces

More people are choosing to get orthodontic treatment because of the innovative options currently available. Ceramic braces blend in with teeth color and are significantly less conspicuous than traditional metal braces. Orthodontic treatment improves oral health and function, and enhances self-esteem by improving the smile.

About Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are similar to traditional metal braces in that they include adhered brackets and archwire that gradually reposition teeth into correct alignment and require adjustments every four to six weeks. They are compiled of exceptionally strong composite materials. Ceramic braces are available in different transparency levels from those that match natural teeth color to completely transparent, or clear ceramic braces. The three most popular brands are Transcend and Clarity, by 3M Unitek®, and Mystique®, made by GAC International. Like metal braces, ceramic braces require a metal wire that spans across the teeth, affixed by rubber bands. The wire used with ceramic braces may be available in white, rather than silver, again reducing the cosmetic impact. Brackets are adhered to the teeth using a plasma light with a strong adhesive.

Ceramic Braces versus Metal Braces

Ceramic and metal braces both effectually align the teeth. The brackets of ceramic braces are rounded on the corners and ends. Patients have reported that ceramic braces are more comfortable than wearing metal braces, and there is less pain created by the chafing of the gums.

Ceramic braces do not stain and people can continue to eat normally without any discoloration, however both metal and plastic ties can be stained when subjected to some foods. The following tips help limit staining:

  • Brush after every meal
  • Floss and rinse often
  • Do not smoke
  • Avoid strongly colored food such as, red tomato paste, mustard, red wine, coffee and dark colored drinks
  • Keep orthodontic appointments as ligatures are replaced during every adjustment visit

Many people have a misconception that ceramic brackets are fragile, and easily broken. Ceramic braces are as durable as metal braces when they are bound with a plasma light.
Research studies indicate that a pleasing smile supplies social benefits at all ages. Orthodontic treatment can establish a healthy bite, and improve overall oral health. For these reasons, there has been a huge growth in orthodontic treatment for both children and adults. Ceramic braces are the cosmetic alternative for patients wanting inconspicuous, effective orthodontia treatment.
