How to Maintain a Happy, Healthy Smile with Braces

Braces are a significant investment for the future of a happy, healthy smile. Oral care is the best way to protect your smile during and after your braces. Dr. Rice and his expert team share their guidance on to maintain a healthy smile with these simple and effective steps.

Good oral hygiene habits – The most important step to maintain healthy braces begins with proper oral hygiene. With braces, there are more caveats and crooks that require continual deep cleaning. To avoid food getting trapped into crevices, be sure to brush, floss and use mouthwash daily. In addition to the standard tooth care, the following steps are also recommended:

  • Remove elastics before brushing your teeth.
  • Move toothbrush bristles deep into the nooks and gaps of your braces.
  • Consider an electric toothbrush for even more thorough cleaning.

Don’t skip an appointment – It’s important to keep up with scheduled appointments with your oral hygienist. During these appointments, your doctor will examine your progress and provide additional recommendations or tips. It’s important to not only keep your appointments up, but also follow instructions provided during that session.

Maintain a proper diet – After your braces are placed, your oral hygienist will provide you with a list of do’s and don’ts when it comes to the proper diet. It’s important to follow the diet as closely as possible to avoid broken braces or injured teeth.
